“No great work has ever been produced except after a long interval of still and musing meditation”

The day has a welcome dreariness. Rain is in the forecast. It’s a great day to go to the dump.

A woodpecker woke me up this morning. I could hear it tapping on the side of the house. It was one persistent bird until I opened the window and scared it away. Later I noticed the feeder is out of suet. Maybe the bird was just reminding me.

It’s one of those days when my muse has taken a vacation and left no forwarding address. I’ve combed my memories and nothing jumps out at me. Today will be a mishmash.

Last night was the start of the new Amazing Race, and I laughed out loud a few times. My favorite part was the turtle shell boats. The background music was wonderful as the boats slowly sank and teams were left standing in waist deep water wondering what the heck happened. A few boats sank three or four times before the teams learned to balance themselves in their boats. One of the teams is at a distinct disadvantage as the race travels the world from country to country. They were looking for Stonehedge and were unimpressed when they found a pile of rocks. At the castle challenge they needed to find a flag on the battlement, and the team went from person to person asking each if he or she was the battlement. That same team couldn’t find the small turtle shell boats right behind them, and they answered London when asked what country they were in. There was  a preview of next week. The teams will be in Ghana.

The house is quiet. The windows are closed against the damp chill, and the animals are napping. I can hear even Gracie breathing. She’s on the chair in this room; Fern is on a pillow in the living room and Maddie is on the bed upstairs. I am the only creature stirring.

Every day I’m on the hunt for a trip, but nothing has appealed to me. The only criterion is I can’t have been there before. With so much of the world still there for me to see, you’d think I’d find something.

The best part of the Amazing race for me was the driving. All of them got into the wrong side of the car at the airport and then were completely confused by the many roundabouts and poor signage on their roads. I think the Brits purposely did these things as pay back for America having bailed them out of two world wars.

      Bob,
I’d forgotten about them getting in the wrong side to drive, and I did get a laugh from it.

It is difficult to adjust to shifting with your right rather than left hand. It takes a bit of practice.

When I was in Ghana, I learned to negotiate the roundabouts. It would have been really easy to enter in the wrong direction as there are so many rotaries here, and I was used to turning right.

    Hi Kat,
There was a Downy Woodpecker in my neighborhood that figured out he could make a spectacular racket if he did his territorial drumming on an aluminum downspout. Waaay better than a hollow tree limb. Now I have a Mockingbird that includes a cellphone ring tone and a vehicle backup beeper in his repertoire.

      Hi Caryn,
It was a downy woodpecker here too. They seem to love making all that noise and don’t realize that the aluminum siding would yield much dinner.

I’d love to hear the backup sound from your mockingbird. Clever bird.

It´s so fun to see the Amazing Race 🙂 🙂 But I don´t think that we´ll see this season until next year. One could of course see Stonehenge as a pile of rocks 🙂 🙂 🙂 But I think that it can be seen as blasphemy by some 🙂 🙂 🙂

I think it lives as many people in London as it lives in Sweden, but I don´t think I would call it a country anyway 🙂 🙂 🙂 I have to say that the Amazing Race is anything but good PR for the USA 🙂

Cold and eventually sunny over here today. So now there´s a fire in the stove and a hot cup of tea by my side.
    Have a great day now!
    Christer.

      Christer,
Only one team didn’t have any idea what Stonehenge is. They hadn’t ever heard of it. The rest of the teams were awed by the sight.

That team has no idea of the world. They just sounded ignorant. Even Phil thought it funny-you could tell by his face.

I came home to an empty house and it’s again pouring down rain outside. Ann was over sitting for the baby at Rebecca’s house so the whole place was dark and dreary. Both Himmies jumped me for cookies, cried as if I stepped on both their paws. It was a real concert. Maggy claws my pants and can’t get unhung so that’s a big deal. She’s ruined many a pair of pants so I’m forced to the floor to unwind her claw. Once both are happy with their grub I finally can turn on some lights. The wind is also strong today so the front yard is crowded with dead palms. I’ll wait till the weekend to pick them up. Otherwise it was a pretty good day.

      Z&Me,
That was quite a homecoming. Animals hate their routine disturbed in any way and make their displeasure loudly known and cats are the worst.

If I don’t give my two their morning Temptations, Fern grabs me on the way by her. Yesterday I had to race to the grocery store as I had none left.
