The Cat in the Window (The Bird in the Sky): Petula Clark
This song was released in 1967 but was a chart disappointment as it reached no higher than 26, her least successful US release up to that date.

Mario,
So that song, which I don’t seem to remember, was also more successful than this one.

That’s it! But she kept recording hit songs in French until the mid 1980’s. In fact, Petula Clark had more popular songs in French than in English. In the 1960’s, she was married to a French man and living in that country, where she recorded many songs that don’t appear in her English albums, including some penned by Serge Gaisbourg.

Mario,
I have a few of her songs in French, but I didn’t realize she had recorded so many and that they were so successful. I’ll have to do another posting of songs in a language other than English by well known singers.

Yes Pétula’s French career was in many ways more successful than her English one. It’s just that the English career covered America and that’s what counts in pop music.
She actually had a No 1 hot in Canada in the late 1970s with a French language song, after her English language hits had dried up and her French albums make the charts in Belgium, Canada and France in the 2000s.
She recorded some new songs in French in 2003 for an album that went to No 1 on the mid price charts in France.
You can get a lot of information on http://www.petulaclark.net, which is a really comprehensive website of her career, past and present as she sets off on a world tour in Australia and New Zealand, but which will take in a date in Montréal, a French speaking city in Canada.

Tris,
Thanks for the link, Tris. As I told, Mario, I didn’t realize how extensive and how successful Petula’s French language songs were.
I also didn’t know she had released an album as soon ago as 2003.

You are very welcome.
Anything you want to know about pet Clark… I’m your man. If I don’t know the answer my mate Theo will.
