When You Wish Upon a Star: Cliff Edwards

He can call himself Cliff Edwards as much as he wants, but I know he's really Jiminy Cricket.

      marielle,
I didn’t know Ukulele Ike, but I found him on youtube. I love the really early clips.

      Thanks for the introduction!

This song was written by Ned Washington and Leigh Harline for the 1940 Disney movie Pinocchio, where the character Jiminy Cricket sings it at the beginning and end of the movie. Washington was a prolific lyricist on songs for film, and Harline was a staff composer for Disney.

Cliff “Ukulele Ike” Edwards was the voice of Jiminy Cricket and performed this song in the movie. Edwards was a popular singer and actor in the ’30s and ’40s, also providing the voice of Jim Crow in the Disney move Dumbo.

In Sweden, Norway and Denmark, the song has become a Christmas song, often referring to the Star of Bethlehem. The Swedish language version is called “Ser du stjarnan i det bla,” roughly translated: “Do you see the star in the blue sky,” and the Danish title is “Nar du ser et stjerneskud,” which sort of means “When you see a falling star.”

      sblake,
I always thought this song was magical. I wished on the first star I saw every night-actually I still do.

In the comment above, I mentioned I didn’t know Ukulele Ike and here he is again.

I can see how this can be a Christmas song.

  3. Cliff Edwards was really an important artist of the 1920’s. He was part of the Roaring Twenties! I’ll be the bad guy : I don’t think too much of that Disney thing,’ cause it don’t sound like Cliff Edwards. You must hear his truly unique version of Stack-O-Lee and Singin’ in the rain (Yes, that was a Cliff Edwards record), songs like California Here I Come, Hard Headed Hannah.

      Mario,
Thanks so much for the link. I wouldn’t have recognized him as Cliff Edwards because I had only heard the Jiminy voice.

      That is excellent.
