"Attila the Hun ( Raymond Quevedo) began singing in 1911 and was at his most prominent in the 1930s and 1940s. He was one of the pioneers in spreading awareness of calypso beyond its birthplace in Trinidad and Tobago. Together with the Roaring Lion (Rafael de Leon) he brought calypso to the United States for the first time in 1934."

Really cool. I could (almost) hear a steel drum band in the background, but I think it was xylophone and ukelele doing the same work. I looked on Wikipedia and it’s not clear, but probably the modern steel drum hadn’t been developed when this was recorded. Correct me if there’s any steel in there. No matter, it’s great.

I wish I knew more about this, and I did a bit of looking with little success. The album is called Calypso Music of Trinidad 1930’s-1940’s if that helps at all.
