This song on the album is probably one of my favorites.I remember singing it and thinking ,am I really carying on like my Dads life? At the time I didn’t think so but now later in life I find I do mimic a few of his traits

morpfy,
It is definitely my favorite as well. It never struck me the same way. It is a father-son song.

Neil’s explanation for this is the one he uses in almost every concert. He bought a farm in Canada in the early 1970’s and a caretaker and his wife lived on the farm and he was taking Neil around the farm when the song just came to him…..The caretaker of the that cattle ranch? His name was Louis Avila. The ranch was the Broken Arrow Ranch, purchased for $350,000 in 1970 (just think about those real estate prices compared to now!). Reportedly, Avila was giving Young a tour of the place and asked him how a young man like him could afford a place like this. Young, aged 25, replied “Just lucky, Louie, just real lucky.” Avila was quite bemused.

sblake,
With all the festivities of late I somehow missed this-sorry!
This is totally new to me as is most of what you unearth. I didn’t realize Neil Young had ever bought a farm, and it does set me back a bit wondering what it might cost now. It is amazing the cost of land and houses let alone a ranch.
