9 Comments on “Who Knows Where the Time Goes: Fairport Convention with Sandy Denny”
What is fascinating about this song is that Judy Collins actually recorded it before Sandy Denny as Sandy had scheduled it for her first solo album. The original Denny recording eventually made it on to the Fairport Convention album (Unhalfbricking)after it had been remastered to allow it to have strings and the rest of the band…..
sblake,
I fell in love with the Judy version as that was the first I had heard then I heard Sandy Denny sing this. Right away that became my favorite version though I do still like the Judy.
like ljhord (and millions of others), this is one of my favorite songs from the sixties. As ‘beautiful’ as Collins did it, Denny’s voice on her own words always stops me cold, but the song actually has me from the start, with Thompson’s and Nicol’s electric guitars weaving around Ashley Hutchings’ magnificent bass line. It was this interplay of words and music (also so apparent on Unhalfbricking’s “A Sailor’s Life” that really Fairport Convention for me…
J,
That’s exactly what happened to me when I first heard Sandy Denny sing this. Judy had long been a favorite and she did sing this beautifully but Sandy’s voice has a regret that Judy never gives me.
