470 Bus !
I can still see the kids from Dorking Grammar and Ashcombe at the bus stop waiting to take the 470 back to Leatherhead, Ashtead and Epsom – it was pouring with rain and everyone was singing “In the Summertime”
1970 ? I was 15 going on 16 🙂

My Dear Hedley,
I was in Ghana when this song was “hot” (sorry). I don’t remember when I first heard it.
I love memories songs make vivid and alive again.

Ray Dorset, who was the group’s lead singer and guitarist, wrote this song.
This was Mungo Jerry’s first hit single. They had several other hits in their native Britain and in other parts of the world, but this was their only hit in the States.
This sold over 16 million copies worldwide and was Britain’s biggest-selling single in 1970. Later on, it was used regularly in many different commercials and became one of the most recognizable songs. Many years later, it became the world’s most-played radio song and the most successful summer song ever.
Strangely, in Australia, this was never released as,in 1967, there was a complete ban on overseas recordings on radio.A period of eight months that was probably the most bizarre period of radio of all time…

sblake,
I didn’t realize when I first heard them that Mungo Jerry wasn’t a pseudonym for the lead singer but the band’s name.
I too find it bizarre not to play releases from other than Australia.
