I so loved this album. I remember buying the vinyl when I was in college and playing it until my roommates screamed uncle. The year was 1967 and the album was John Wesley Harding.

Dylan says this song arrived at the same time as the song, “Down along the cove” and was his first venture into what he said was “putting the tree back in country”.
Recorded in Nashville on Nov 29 in 1967 it was first performed live at the Isle of Wight Festival in August 1969(sic)
Unlike “Down along the cove” Dylan did not rework the song and left it as it stood.
As Dylan said later about this album, “The older albums don’t rally mean something to some people until they are hearing the new one, and in retrospect they go back and hear something else from the path that’ll seem like it takes the steps that leads up to the new one”

sblake,
I read his quote twice before I understood exactly what he meant. It makes perfect sense. The new ones are born from pieces of the older ones. I can hear it.

My wife liked the Ub40 version of this song. (I think UB40 was the band). Then I introduced her to Bob Dylans version. Now she’s a convert. Great song.

Thanks, BGO
There is something that catches me in the Dylan. I don’t know the band you mention. Appears I need to doa bit of searching.
