Julie Felix, a remarkable singer whose popularity in England was greater than in the US**.In fact she was the first folk singer to record for the Decca label in England, where she had a string of hit albums
In 1966 Felix became the resident singer on the popular BBC TV programme The Frost Report, presented by David Frost. She hosted from 1968 to 1970 her own TV shows on the BBC, including the series Once More With Felix (the first episode was transmitted on 9 December 1967). Among those featured on her show were The Kinks, Leonard Cohen and Led Zeppelin’s lead guitarist, Jimmy Page, who played the “White Summer” and “Black Mountain Side” guitar solo pieces. On 1 May 1967 she appeared on the German TV show Beat-Club; in September 1968 at the International Essen Song Days. Her late 1960s recordings included Going to the Zoo, a collection of children’s songs on Fontana Records, and in 1969 she was one of the artists featured at the Isle of Wight Festival. She is well known for her support of anti war causes(see below)
She recently celebrated her 70th!birthday and is still touring England [see: http://www.knibbworld.com/juliefelix/reviews.htm%5D
** “I took off for Greece in June 62, supposedly for three months, but I never went home, I came to Britain via France, Italy and Spain, singing in folk clubs and even army bases… I love the climate in California, but I hate Los Angeles. I still have a US passport as well as a UK one, which means I can miss the queues at both ends! What I like about Europe is that you can just pop over to Holland or Spain and there’s so much diversity and cultural richness and everywhere is so close. Britain is great because, despite the fact that we supported Bush during the Iraqi conflict, which I strongly disapproved of, we could still obtain independent information in this country. That just doesn’t happen in the States. What Bush says is seen as more or less gospel.”

sblake,
You’re so right-I didn’t find her until long after her heyday. It was a fortuitous find as I love the purity of her voice. The show description makes me sorry I missed it. I wonder why she never became as popular here. The timing looks about right-with Baez recording and folk making its greatest growth here.
