“Sisters share the scent and smells – the feel of a common childhood.”

It is a glorious day, but World Cup Soccer holds us inside, enthralled, as we root for the USA against Algeria. Shouts and screams and a few obscenities have kept me in touch with the action as I sit here, and I run in for the replay so I can do my share of the moaning and groaning. I am not a die-hard soccer fan, but I always root for my home team. The only games I’ve watched have been the US and Ghana. I hate those horns!!

My boys of summer lost last night. We were a crowd of twelve and we went early to have dinner near the field. The whole area was awash with Red Sox fans wearing t-shirts, hats and jerseys. Too bad our numbers couldn’t have propelled the boys to a victory.

This is a lazy vacation. We get to sit and enjoy each other’s companionship, watch a little sports and eat great food. I think the only thing missing is a hammock hung in the shade between two trees. I guess the patio will just have to do.

When we were kids, my sister Maureen was a nuisance, a blight on my social life. My brother and I had fights over whose turn it was to babysit when my parents went out on a Saturday night. I hated to lose because I’d have to sit and watch my two sisters play dolls. I’d  seethe the whole time that I was stuck home. Little did I know that my sisters would become my friends, people with whom I choose to spend time and, in the case of Moe, choose to fly across the country to visit. If I had known back then, I might have joined them for a little while and play dolls.

URRRGGGGGHHHHH…I am at my desk in Detroit, listening to England – Slovenia, tracking the USA and 12 minutes to go – I cant take it !

      My Dear Hedley,
Seeing it was just as nerve wracking-so many lost opportunities and a bad call. We screamed, and a few obscenities filled the air. My nephew kept telling the team how much time they had left.

Obscenities are good and so are jingoist remarks – some are easy, but it can be quite a challenge to insult the good folks from Slovenia or say Paraguay.

I´m not the biggest soccer fan either, but it´s so much more fun seeing it together with those that are 🙂 If I understand it right the US won? Great!

So Your boys lost last night! To bad.

I´m the younbgest in my family so I don´t know if my siblings fought over who would stay with me 🙂 But I think my sister did it most times. But later on I spend most of those times at my best friends home. They had so much better cookies than we had 🙂 🙂 🙂

    Have a great day now!
    Christer.

        My Dear Hedley,
We’ll all reappear at the end of the weekend white and dark eyed from never seeing the sun.

      Christer,
My sister and her family have been soccer fans forever. My nephew started when he was three and had a full scholarship to play at Oregon State.

I really did hate staying home on Saturday nights with my two little sisters.

Then at least your sister will be impressed that I was in Madrid, along with my son and two friends, as the guest of Heineken to see the UEFA Champions League Final between Inter Milan and Bayern Munich.

        Love those Facebook contests 🙂

    My DEar Hedley,
I actually told them about it this morning, and they were really impressed and a bit jealous.

My childhood was imbued with soccer and I had the great honour as a young teenager to play for West Ham juniors and managed to meet the great WHam team of 1963 and 1965….Its good to see the US move on to the final 16 ahead of England..We here in Australia bowed out bravely this morning 9as we expected)….

    • hedley's avatar hedley Says:

Then you probably met Joe Kirkup who was my neighbour in Ashtead

      sblake,
I never saw a socer game until I was a senior in high school. It wasn’t played where I lived. Since then, of course, all the school have both girls’ and boys’ teams. Soccer has come a long way in the US.
