In the very early 1980s, I was fortunate to attend a Mary McCaslin/Jim Ringer concert in a lovely, small auditorium on the Harvard campus. Jim was having one of his nights, and so (now I’m thinking of Mary) the expression “If looks could kill” comes to mind. Yet there was a subtleness to that couple’s interactions and behavior that defies description by someone who only knows their music.

Fred,
I don’t know Jim Ringer. I’ll have to look him up and give a listen. Great story!

I don’t think I’ve heard Mary McCaslin before. Her style reminds me a lot of Kate Wolfe. Really great, in other words.

Ted,
My ear didn’t make that connect, but I’ll listen to Kate again. I agree about the greatness.

McCaslin and Wolfe–an interesting comparison. I’ll think about that. My first reaction is, Kate’s voice is (was) far sweeter. But we can agree on them both being “great”! I feel privileged to have sat at Kate’s feet when she sang at the intimate “Thomas Homestead” folk festival in NY’s Southern Tier back in the 1970s. That remains one of my fondest festival memories over the years. I still miss her.

Fred,
I am envious of the two concerts you have already mentioned, especially the Kate. I would truly loved to have heard her. What a loss.

Typo alert: Kate’s last name is “Wolf.” I misspelled. There’s an annual Kate Wolf Memorial Festival, in California; see

Fred,
Thanks! I made sure I spelled it correctly on this morning’s post.

I’ve been thinking a lot of some old friends lately, and then along comes this song. Sweet and soulful. Thanks for posting this!

You’re welcome, Nan
I hope they were good memories filled with warmth.
