Opera singers particularly bel canto, have a tendency to use the ‘swell” in their voice range all the time, so singing pop songs can be immensely difficult because you either constrain your voice (throat range) or your sound levels (by singing piano/pianissimo all the time).Domingo is successful here because he doesn’t allow his throat range or voice swell to take over and because the arranger places him in harmony with John. Many opera lovers hate this but I think its a remarkable duet because John is able to sing “up to” Domingo, which is hard for someone with such a small range
Denver wrote this and recorded it as a duet with Placido Domingo. It was not expected to be a commercial success; a radio station played it on the air as a way to preview the song because none of the office turntables were working at the time. The call-in response from listeners was overwhelming and convinced them to release it. It received considerable radio airplay.
Denver was so impressed by the way that Placido Domingo sang his lyrics that it changed the way Denver sang his own songs from then on.
sblake,
I surprised myself by liking this song. It didn’t seem my usual sort. When I played it as a possible posting, I remembered how much I liked both their voices together, a strange combination.
