Diamonds and Rust: Joan Baez

This is the title song from her 1975 album and was a top forty hit for Baez who at first claimed this was about her husband David. She later admitted it was about Dylan.

She never fooled anybody with that one.

Bob’s birthday was Tuesday. 69 years and still rockin’.

      Ted,
I had forgotten. It is difficult to believe it’s been so many years of having Dylan around.

In this song, Joan Baez is singing to her former lover Bob Dylan fondly reminiscing about their 1960s affair. Released as a single, this track became only her second top 40 hit in the States, and her biggest self-composed hit (her other hit came in 1971 with “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.” Legend has it that this was the product of some record company ultimatum given to Baez to deliver a chart song or else.
In addition to singing on this, Baez played the Moog and Arp Synthesizers.

The end of Side 1 of the album contains a parody of Bob Dylan’s voice on his own “A Simple Twist Of Fate.”

      sblake,
I remember when it was being played on regular radio. It seemed strange to hear Joan sandwiched among the rock.

I love her Dylan on that song.

Thanks. This brings back memories I didn’t even HAVE, much less live through. It is just that good a song.

      Rick,
This is among my favorite Baez songs. It is not the young Joan I remembered first, but an older, more mature voice.

Last March, Joan Baez was touring in France (only 3 dates) and my wife and I had the privilege to seat at one concert. It was a beautiful evening, even though Joan’s voice needs a lot of time to warm… Anyway, most of the audience thought the show was really magic. And Joan sang “Diamonds…” in a deeply moving way (before impersonating Dylan in “Don’t think twice” !). And, above all, she was just too happy to oblige the people who wanted to use their cameras ! Something you don’t see very often nowadays…
Kat, thanks for not forgetting Joan.

      iero,
I have been listening to Joan since the early 1960’s. While most of my friends were huge rock and roll fans, I loved folk music. It was all around me with the most amazing singers and groups. I remember going to a coffeehouse and listening to folk singers.

Playing Joan was just as much for me.
