“I often think that the night is more alive and more richly colored than the day.”
It’s a might chilly. This morning, I threw an afghan over the spread, got warm and cozy then fell back to sleep. Gracie joined me. We slept a long while so it’s a late start.
Last night, on the way home, I saw two coyotes. They have become a common sight here on the Cape. Our neighborhood used to have one, but he hasn’t been around in a while. I know because I’ve seen the rabbits. One rabbit is a frequent visitor who eats my flowers and sits on the lawn outside the front door to torment Gracie. When a coyote is around, there are no rabbits or skunks or other small animals. My friend once saved her dog from a coyote. It was early evening, and she was inside when she heard the whelps of her dog, a sheltie. A coyote had it by the haunches and was dragging it away. My friend scared the coyote who ran and left the dog who was unhurt except for a few scratch marks from the coyote’s teeth. Gracie is too big for a coyote.
I used to be a night person, up all hours. In the summer, I’d sit out on the small farmer’s deck I used to have. All the houses around me were dark. I could have been the only person alive in the whole world. I’d sit and listen to the night. I’d hear birds singing and peepers and frogs and katydids who were always the loudest of them all. As I drifted off to sleep at two this morning, I heard the night. It was alive with sounds.

Strong winds and rather cold over here today and tonight the rain will come they say.
How big is a coyote? I guess itΒ΄s little bigger than a fox. No coyotes over here though.
IΒ΄ve always been a morning person and most mornings I get that feeling to, that I could be the only person in the world π
Have a great day now!
Christer.

It’s the Army’s name for that vehicle.
As an example, this is a Badger: http://www.theguardian.pe.ca/documents/TheGuardian/9%20Badger.jpg

Christer,
We have the rain and cold this morning!
The coyotes here can go 30-40 pounds. They are bigger than their Western cousins and also bigger than the foxes.
The early mornings when the fog is on the ground are my favorites.

i love the nighttime, when summer vacation arrives and i no longer must get the dolls up for school i will stay up later and later. i also think i need the solitude, here during the day it is quiet now but soon the days will be fun of children and laughter and schemes to occupy the summer daze. so nighttime is the right time to be alone.
coyotes are such beautiful animals, but very intimidating; must have been the way of a pup to domesticate dogs.
enjoy the weekend, storms are on their way here this evening, should be quite a show!

splendid,
That was my pattern in the summer when I used to teach-staying up all hours. My street is seldom noisy, even in the summer. The kids are still young.
The ones around here are absolutely beautiful.
Thunder and rain this morning!

I think I’m a split shift person. I like the early morning from about 2 AM to 9 or 10 AM. After that it’s nap time. Around 6PM I’m more awake until about 9 or 10. I get the early morning animal sounds and activities and the early evening animal sounds and activities. That makes me crepuscular which is an ugly sounding word for active at dawn and dusk. Like raccoons, possums and skunks. π
The coyotes around here are very large. There is a bit of grey wolf DNA in eastern coyotes and these look like they have more than their share of it. They are not preying upon the little critters at the moment. They are going for the deer and leaving the small stuff for other predators.

Caryn,
I like an afternoon nap. It dates back to when I worked and got up at 5. On Fridays I always napped so I could stay up late like an adult.
Love that word!
I don’t know of any coyotes here on the Cape which have attacked deer. They tend to go for the smaller creatures. Cats too are especially vulnerable.

Well Kat at least you don’t have Gators up there. There’s always someone with a bigger problem, ain’t that so? My worst incident was a raccoon that had her young in my woods and they often came onto the lawn to play. When she saw me it was all out attack mode. I even hit her with a shovel. They all left town after that. Good thing too.

Z&Me,
Nope, not a gator but last summer we did have the great whites off-shore.
Maybe she just didn’t like you! Raccoons can be choosy.
