“The regulars are coming out!”

The sun has been in and out all morning. I hope it decides to stay.

Last night Gracie was after a mouse. The sounds of her dislodging its hiding places are what alerted me. When I first checked, Gracie was standing still and patiently watching one spot in the living room. A bit later I heard her in the dining room where she was standing alert by the chest on the floor near the windows. She was there a long time. Finally, Gracie joined me in the den, jumped on her chair and went to sleep. I figured the beastie had gotten the better of her.

This morning I found a dead mouse, a little gray mouse, on the dining room floor. I suspect Gracie was the cause of its demise. When the cats do in a mouse, the departed looks untouched, merely sleeping. This one had no apparent injuries but did have matted fur. A DNA analysis would probably discover canine spit. My dog, the mighty hunter!

From my window I can see the bird feeders. A downy woodpecker is munching away at the suet, and a greedy blue jay is flapping its wings for balance at a smaller feeder as it grabs seeds. It’s too big to land securely on the perch. Gold finches are back, the males now a bright yellow. The chickadees never left. A squirrel is hanging upside down and eating at one of the feeders so I have to excuse myself for just a minute………I’m back. The squirrel is gone.

It’s a long weekend here. Tomorrow is Patriot’s Day. It’s also Marathon Monday, and the Sox start at 11. Over at Lexington and Concord, the Redcoats are coming, but, don’t worry, the warning will be in time.  The Minutemen will be ready.

It has been much the same weather over here today, plus a strong wind. The day sort of never lifted if You know what I mean.

Erna is the one catching mouses amongst my dogs. But she, like the cats never leaves clues to what has happened. She eats them! I don´t know how many times I have stopped her from chewing a newly catched mouse out in the forest. The two brothers just lets the mouses and rats (two years ago) just walk right over them 🙂 🙂

Yesterday I saw another couple of squirrels out in the forest, so now I know that we at least have two couples here 🙂
    Have a great day now!
    Christer.

      Christer,
The day never did get sunny. It even rained a bit. That’s three straight days of no sun!

Gracie, luckily, didn’t gnaw on it. That would have grossed me out. Two cats live here, and it’s the dog who catches the mouse!

Two squirrels will soon become many squirrels. You’ll be overrun by the beasties!

On my first trip to Washington DC I discovered a memorial to grey squirrels in Lafayette Park near the White House. The inscription was praising the success of a program to bring the grey squirrel back from the brink of extinction. My companion and I had some difficulty with the concept.

      caryn,
I agree with you. Why bring them back? We have plenty of squirrels. They just have to check my yard to prove it. It was at the Smithsonian where I read that squirrels carry more diseases than rats!

My God, what’d ya do? shoot him?

      Z&Me,
After I wrote that, I figured someone would think gone as no longer with us, but, alas, it wasn’t so. He was gone as no longer at my feeder!

Marley got a mouse this morning. He didn’t come to bed last night so I suspect it was an all-nighter for him. He’s been asleep all day on my freshly washed sheets. Marley, though, likes to eat his mouse. Every scrap of it. I caught him mid-process and flushed it. You’d think the cat was starving to death and not overweight by at least four pounds.

      Erin,
My cats like hunting and destroying. They haven’t ever even taken a bite. The body lies on the floor as if in state. Gross-the mid-process part.

I’d like to put in my order for one of those homemade squirrel lamps. I’ll pay extra if you can make one with eyes that light up.

      Nosila,
Your comment made me laugh! I do admit, though, that I like the lit up eyes idea!
