“If summer had one defining scent, it’d definitely be the smell of barbecue.”

It is a cool morning at 69˚ but another lovely day. Rain is predicted, but I have trouble believing the weatherman given the beauty of the morning. My to-do list for today includes the dump now that I have my sticker. I can hardly wait.

My father took charge of the barrels on trash day when I was a kid. I remember him dressed for work in his top coat and fedora dragging the barrels out of the cellar. He’d drag them back in when he got home, always late. He was never home for dinner. My father worked a long day. We never saw much of him during the week. On Saturdays I loved going with him to do errands. My favorite place was the Chinese laundry. It was in a small building on a corner in the square. The long broad iron was on the right in front of a window as you came inside. I remember the steam rising from it when the laundryman ironed. There was a big counter as you walked in with shelves behind it which held cleaned shirts and stuff wrapped in brown paper. My father always had his shirts cleaned. He wore only white shirts to work.

When I was young, we had hot dogs and hamburgers off the grill for Saturday suppers in the summer. We had corn. My father ate his corn typewriter fashion. I was mesmerized. When we were older, my mother expanded the menu. She had sausages, Italian and Chinese, steak tips and chicken. I was partial to the chicken and the Chinese sausages. My father manned the hibachi. They never had a big grill by choice. He’d sit outside have a drink or two and watch the meat. My father was the consummate grill master. My mother made all the sides. She made a great potato salad, and I loved her peppers and onions.

Nala is a chewer and a digger. The other day when I got home I found a chewed pen and some chewed trash she had pulled from the bag. She dug a hole beside the driveway deep enough to hide a body.

Last night around 12:30 I started to clear the den. I went through some boxes, threw all sorts of stuff away and filled a trash bag, just what I needed, another trash bag. The den looks neater. I did the test, the walk in, to see how it looked. I did that about three times moving stuff each time. Finally, I sat down for a bit. It was around 1:30. I hate this compulsion to clean. I think I need an exorcist.

The wind is blowing hard and it rains as well, it’s actually quite nice as a change 🙂 No need to wtaer pots outside anyway 🙂

I can actually leave the trash bag in the kitchen all day long and none of the dogs will touch it!! The first time that happens in my life 🙂 🙂 I’m pretty sure that will change when Alma arrives here in July so I better enjoy it while it lasts 🙂 🙂

Sune was a chewer and he chewed anything that I wore on my feet. Sock, slippers shoes, he chewed them all 🙂 🙂

    Have a great day!

      Hi Christer,
We had maybe five minutes of rain. I was disappointed. We really ned rain .

Shauna trashed picked, and I’d find cans all over the house. Nala picks and chooses. She pulls out only a couple of things., I usually just shut it and the doesn’t bother with it.

      Nala is definitely a chewer.

      Enjoy your day!

    Hi Kat,
My old dog Tegan was a digger and a chewer. She died in 2004 but I think the yard didn’t stop looking like Verdun post WWI for at least 10 years after that. I had to warn the lawn guys to be careful of hidden pits. It’s mostly flat, now. I won’t go into the bits of house and other objects she chewed. She was legendary in that field.
Rocky is not a digger and seems to have no idea how. His idea of burying something is to put it on the ground and nose some grass blades over it. Piki Dog has definite digging potential but I discourage him as soon as he starts. Undoubtedly Nala’s digging and chewing will slow down. Eventually.
The weather here is going back and forth between sunny and dry and cloudy and raining. It’s not hot and that’s all I care about.
You have my sympathies with your cleaning compulsion. Difficult to exorcise once begun, though.
    Enjoy the evening.

      Hi Caryn,
There are still Gracie holes under the deck. I have to jump over a couple of others under the steps.

I was gone for a while today, and Nala pulled stuff from out of the baskets under the table. I found all sorts of chewed items around the house. Upstairs she tore apart bags. The house was messy when I got home. Eventually?

I was outside playing my uke in the uke group, and I got quite cold. Before I left I thought about wearing a long sleeve shirt. I should have. I just shut a downstairs window much to Nala’s chagrin as she likes looking out that window.

It rained for 5 minutes but very lightly. I was disappointed.

Tomorrow I have a few floors to wash, particularly the kitchen, a map of dog prints.

      Enjoy your day,

    Hi Kat,

Today’s weather is a repeat of yesterday. The high temperature was 97° which was not a record. The record for yesterday was 103° set in 1911. In the DFW area we get an average of 20 100° days a year. I didn’t realize that today is flag day until I drove down my street on my way to work and noticed flags flying in front of the houses.

Your father’s metal trash cans have been replaced by plastic ones which the garbage truck can hoist up and empty them into the truck. We have two covered bins with wheels. One is green for recycling and the other is black for garbage. They pick up the both on Tuesdays and only the garbage on Friday.

Barbecue in Texas usually is smoked meat over post oak coals. It’s mostly brisket, or pork ribs, or sausage. Unfortunately, brisket has gotten very expensive and barbecue as become expensive. One of the most famous places is Arron Franklin’s returaunt in Austin. If you don’t get in line by 8:30 AM for lunch you won’t get any. We have a gas grill and do hamburgers and hot dogs often.

Did you watch the Westminster Dog Show on TV yesterday?

      Hi Bob,
Today stayed chilly. I have closed some windows as the den is cold. Tomorrow will be cool as well. I guess the heat wave is close to a week away. I also forgot it was flag day. I have banners I usually hang on the fence. At least I’ll remember July 4th.

Those trucks which automatically pick up, empty then return the barrels aren’t used down here yet. The only trash companies are private and they still dump. I was behind one of those trucks one time. That was the first time I had seen them and thought they were kind of neat. I just go to the dump. The dump has recently been renovated and everything looks great.

I love hot dogs and burgers. When I go out to eat, I often order a burger. Briskets are my favorite meal to barbecue. I don’t grill when I am alone so I don’t mind paying for the brisket when I have company.

I missed Westminster which I usually watch. Last night I just watched movies.
