“Pray for peace and grace and spiritual food, For wisdom and guidance, for all these are good, but don’t forget the potatoes.”

Today is dreary, dark and muggy, a thick day. The wind comes and goes. It rained earlier for a minute or two, but the sky is still cloudy so maybe the rain’ll be back. I hope so.

My mood changes which is odd because nothing else around me changes. Some days I’m quite happy with my lot while other days I moan and curse my fate. Today, despite the dark and gloom, is a good day. I feel a bit buoyant.

I remember a school trip to the Museum of Science when I was a kid. Each of us had a list of questions, and we were to hunt for the answers in the exhibits. I had an idea. I got my friends together, and we divided the list among us. Each of us had maybe 4 or 5 questions. At the end, we got together and shared our answers. We all did exceptionally well.

Today is roast the potatoes day, a special day, a day to be celebrated before the potatoes develop unseemly eyes. I have some sweet potatoes and a few Yukon Gold. I bought some linguica to add to the sweet potatoes in a hash dish for breakfast or maybe for lunch considering how late I usually sleep. It is waiting in the freezer. The Yukon Gold will become home fries. If I add eggs and bacon to them, I’ll have the perfect breakfast.

Today is bad science fiction movie day. I have plenty of popcorn, and I have some chocolate chips so you know where I’m going with this. It is a treat to get me through movies like Earth vs. The Spider from 1958 and in glorious black and white. The next movie will be Wrestling Women Versus the Aztec Mummy. I just noticed Dead Space from 1991. That movie strikes a little too close to home: “Intergalactic horror awaits the crew of a Saturn space station hoping for a cure as a deadly virus begins to attack them one by one.” I think I’m going back to the Wrestling Women.

    Having a bad Science-fiction day?
Let me introduce you to some old Black-n-White episodes of”
    Tales of Tomorrow.
This was (the first?) sci-fi from back in the early 50’s, sort of like the Twilight Zone except creepier and more science-fiction, and earlier. Some good plots. like this one I’ll share. See also, an episode called “the Duplicates”. More on Youtube. This episode is: All the Time in the World. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51Xs694ks8I&list=PLZbz3OJ5NHVZ3ARt4Yn1fW9UkILbuN-jB&index=83

I peeked, and I love the opening. It has a bit of Frankenstein about it. I’ll watch the rest after I finish here and the corn is popped!

      Thanks!!

    Hi Kat,

Today is repeat of yesterday. Sunny and very hot. Right now it’s 102°. My daughter and I were in the pool and the water is as warm as a bathtub. Just like I like it. 🙂 I’m sitting on the covered patio watching her swim while I write this post.

If I want to watch any science fiction I have to find a place away from my spouse. She thinks it’s all crap and won’t watch any. Once in awhile, when she can’t find anything to watch on TV, she will let me watch an original episode of Star Trek. It takes me back to my college days when Captain Kirk didn’t have sleep apnea and I had a full head of black hair.

I never thought I would live to see the President destroy our democracy like this guy. Nixon was bad enough but he was an amateur compared to Trump. Trump’s minions make Nixon’s look like Boy Scouts. 🙁 During Watergate there were Republicans with backbones like Goldwater who although Conservatives wanted to save the country from a dictatorship. If Trump wins a second term, and the Republicans hold the Senate, then I doubt our democratic republic will survive and we will leave our children essentially a banana Republic kind of country. Already, the divide between the haves and the have-nots is getting wider and the haves are arming themselves to protect their property. That’s Trump’s supporters vision of the this country. Keep it white and don’t admit or let any those lefty brown folks vote or even enter the country.

      Hi Bob,
I’m here listening to the rain which has been here on and of all afternoon. It is cool.

Maybe your wife doesn’t realize that good science fiction begins with the question What if and is plausible. Creature movies are just fun, not really science fiction by the definition. Science fiction has been the source of so many things like communication satellites first envisioned by Arthur Clark.

This is only one site, and there are so many.

I don’t even have words to describe the horror I feel every day that Trump and his swamp remain in power, the fear I feel with him as president. I am amazed that so many people are hoodwinks by this man.

      • Bob Says:

I don’t know why you are surprised that so many people are followers of Trump. We have been a racist and prejudiced country from the very beginning. The founding fathers kicked the slavery can down the road to form a country. And, as soon as Union Troops left the south after the civil war, those states enacted the Jim Crow laws designed to disinfanchise blacks and to keep them down. It wasn’t until1953 in the, Brown vs. The Board of Education of Topeka Kansas that the Supreme Court decided that separate bit equal, wasn’t equal.

The north wasn’t much better, remember the riots in Boston to prevent school bussing in the 1970s?100 years after the civil war, Trump and his father kept their apartment buildings in Queens N.Y. lilly white by pure discrimination. Blacks who applied to rent an apartment were never selected because the managers marked those applications with a big letter C for colored. Trump fought the city’s discrimination board tooth and nail and got a perfunctory slap on the wrist. All those folks who were part of white flight and who said things like, “Some of my best friends are black”, have finally realized that Trump has made it safe and fashionable to be a racist, a xenophobic pig and a jerk while still getting invited to the Whitehouse. 🙂

My hope, other than a Democratic sweep in November, is that the real Republicans will split from the right wing loony tunes who have taken over the Republican Party. Hopefully, they will form a slightly right of center business oriented party that will compromise with the majority of the slightly left of center Democrats. Real Republican’s like George W. Bush, Mitt Romney, Steve Bartlett and others have said privately that they will not vote for Trump. The late former President, George H. W. Bush publicly said in 2016 that he voted for Hillary Clinton, the first time in his life he ever voted for a Democrate.

      • katry Says:

No, I do know there are hateful people. I ran into them several times when I was working in the high school. They were screamers and pointers. I fear the hidden Trump voters, people who won’t publicly admit it. I do remember South Boston. I was appalled by what was happening.

In the Trump family history it is well known they would not rent to Blacks even though Trump has done more for blacks than any other president.

The bedrock republicans are in a party they don’t recognize anymore. It is the Trump Republican Party. It can be toppled, but it will take some work.

Bike rally in town today, it was fun, we fight for a reasonable bike infrastructure. While it’s often too dangerous for kids to bike nowadays our city administration decided to support car traffic downtown even more with parking for free.

Reality is currently more crazy than bad science fiction movies, I just catch up on what happened in Berlin today. Tens of thousands of nazis along with Hare Krishnas, QAnons, flower hippies, Hallelujah singing families and other dangerous idiots on the streets. You wouldn’t want to watch this as a SF movie and all in all it was a bad day for our society, it was another day you could see that our state doesn’t really want to fight rising fascism.

No dinner today, I needed beer. Cheers!

    • katry Says:

      Hi Birgit,
It is happening here as well. One voice tries to out shout the other voice. Neither gets heard. The QAnons may win a seat in the House. They could only arise with a Trump as president.

They added to the bike lane in Boston during the no-traffic months. People are serious about bike lanes.

      I had hot dogs!

    Kat,
EEK! “Intergalactic horror awaits the crew of a Saturn space station hoping for a cure as a deadly virus begins to attack them one by one.” Scares me too, just like 45 scares me. I feel sleepy, but can’t seem to nap. I think the state of our country keeps me awake. I didn’t know it was potatoes day. I’ll have to eat tomatoes…

    Take Care,

    Lori and the gang.

    • katry Says:

      Hi Lori,
Maybe too much sleeping has kept Morpheus from dropping by to stay.

It is my own potatoes day, not an official one. They are great for every meal and for snacks. Think French fries.

The state of our country is scary!!!

  5. olof1 Says:

Foggy here this morning and it was quite nice to walk around in it 🙂 Unfortunately hunters were out in the forest so we had to walk in the village. There’s still cattle in the fields so I didn’t dare to walk there 🙂

Sweet potatoes aren’t potatoes though 🙂 actually close relatives to the morning glories. I’m not a fan of sweet potatoes to be honest so I’ll just continue to eat the real ones 🙂

    Have a great day!

    Christer.

    • katry Says:

      Christer,
I do love morning fog. Here it usually smells like the ocean. I stand on the deck and take it all in. When I was working, I had to cross the river. Sometimes I didn’t even see the river due to fog off the water.

I like all sorts of potatoes, even the real yam. I like sweet potatoes by themselves or in a pie. The hash is delicious.

      Have a wonderful Sunday!

Far out! Diggin’ this set a lot. They all have something to offer though “Voices Green and Purple” might be my fave. “Concerning the UFO Sighting Near Highland” might be the most startling. The music is as pretty as the lyrics are bizarre.

    • katry Says:

I do have fun hunting down songs. I never heard of The Bees before I found this gem. I found a bunch of songs about UFO’s and aliens. It was fun. Thanks for enjoying the music!
