In 1974, I was in my first full year of work as a Bank clerk and the very little money I earned was buying albums.
It was the year of Joni’s Court and Spark, Van Morrison’s ITLTSN, Roxy Music had treated us to Country Life with its impossibly naught cover, it was only Rock and roll for the Stone and Before the Flood brought Dylan back in to the public eye.
But according to the New Musical Express, the album of the year was Steely Dan’s Pretzel Logic. Rock ? Jazz ? Subversive lyrics ? California over production ? Who knows the song was and is blindingly brilliant
I have had many dates with Steely Dan since then, Becker is gone, Donald tours with the name and marches in to Meadowbrook on Thursday night. At some point they will play this, I will close my eyes and just let it sweep over me for the umpteenth time
My Dear Hedley,
I do envy your concert stories, but I also love to read all about who, when and where.
This is one of their songs to which I know all the words. I wouldn’t have guessed it was the album of the year given the other albums which were released.
I have seen a few of my musical icons in concert and, like you, I let the music take me afar.
