The widespread use of air conditioning in the 1950s spurred the growth of cities in the sunbelt, such as Dallas, Atlanta, Houston and Phoenix which would have never grown as large had air conditioning not been available at reasonable cost.

Air conditioning came far later here in New England. Places like movie theaters had them int the late 50’s, early 60’s. Individual home AC units appeared in the 60’s. No one I knew when I was growing up had a full house air conditioner.
In my neighborhood, only two houses have central air.
