“In movies, everyone is always surprised the door is unlocked.”
The air is still. The leaves just sort of hang off the branches. It will be hot and the humidity is returning.
Last night we had a wonderful movie night. The air was cooler than it had been. We feasted on cheese and crackers: Kerrygold Cheddar and mango ginger soft cheese on a variety of crackers. We had movie candy and a cake to celebrate opening night. The movie, Capricorn One, was excellent, so was the cake.
In Ghana, I went to the movies. There were two theaters in Accra. The sitting areas were outside. The entries and the refreshment counters were inside. One was close, walking distance, from the Peace Corps hostel. My favorite time was when it rained. We’d move our chairs under the overhang and stay dry. I remember watching Is Paris Burning and West Side Story.
During my live-in in Bawku, I saw a couple of movies. The local theater was owned by my host father. It was outside, right near the house where I lived. I remember a spaghetti western when reel 3 was showed before reel 2. I think I was the only one who noticed.
In Bolga, the Hotel d’ Bull was the entertainment center for the whole town. It had the cold room, one with air-conditioning, and drinks though I didn’t drink liquor because all they had was whiskey and gin. I did have coke with ice, a treat. The hotel showed movies, really bad movies, but I didn’t care. I loved sitting in the expensive seat, on the roof, and eating kabobs and drinking coke. They’d bring a bowl of water before I ate so I could wash my hands. That was common in Ghana as most people used their hands, not utensils, to scoop their food.
Watching a movie on the deck reminds me of those movie nights in Ghana. We often see a really bad science fiction movie. We don’t care. It is the fun of sitting outside in the dark munching candy and laughing with friends.

It has been windy, cloudy and chilly all day here but thankfully it is at least turning towards warmish now. I’ve never heard of mago and ginger soft cheese before but it does sound delicious!
I’m in film mood and am trying to find something to look at, doomsday or hysterical funny but haven’t found any yet. I know I have several of both and I think I need to go upstairs and start digging in the piles of films I have up there 🙂

That cheese never lasts. It gets eaten right away. I like to have some on hand for me, but I always have it for company.
I went through my films to pick the ones for summer. I have so many different films, most of which my friends haven’t seen, that it is never an easy choice. I love doomsday movies and have been watching them all summer.

For the past 10 years, most of our movie adventures have involved The Prince. I always held out my expertise with shows for the younger set but had nothing when it came to Oscar type stuff. Being a very simple soul, that worked well, as I like to be entertained at the movies and certainly not moralized.
the Prince and I are very busy. Along with Mrs MDH we head for London in 3 weeks for an action packed 10 days which will involve everything from staying in a castle (Hever) to seeing a football match (Tottenham Hotspur v Aston Villa)

I also like to be entertained at the movies. If I wanted to be moralized, I’d go to church. I do not like slasher films of any sort, but I do like to be a bit scare.
The Prince must be getting so excited. I know I ‘d be packing and unpacking. You seem to have planned a perfect vacation. I know The Prince will love this trip!!

Today was a partly cloudy hot day. If I wasn’t working it would be a great day to go to a movie. Because I’m frugal if I want to see a first run movie I go to the multiplex theater in the Valley View shopping mall that is being demolished. The theater is the only portion that remains standing and it’s located on the second floor of what’s left of the mall. This theater offers early bird tickets to the first showing of $4. If a movie is in its second run we go to another multiplex theater in Plano which used to charge a dollar per ticket but is now up to $2.50 per ticket. We always sneak in snacks instead of buying their overpriced candy. Occasionally, I will splurge for popcorn which costs more than the tickets. What’s the fun of a movie without popcorn. 🙁
The rest of this week will be dry and hot possibly hitting the century mark each day. Typical summer in Texas.

Hi Bob,
A thunderstorm is due tomorrow afternoon. Rain from Barry will be here later in the week. Boston should hit 90˚ for a few days of the week making it an official heat wave. We here on the cape will be in the mid to low 80’s. Thank you Atlantic Ocean.
I go in the afternoon to see a movie, but I don’t go as often as I used to. It has gotten expensive, but if there is a movie I really want to see, I bite the bullet and go. I bring candy hidden and a water bottle in my bag but, like you, I get popcorn.
The rest of this week will have uncomfortable heat and humidity!

Just read on line that my Valley View mall theater is now closed. When the property is rebuilt as a mixed use shopping and residential development it will be gentrified and the reopened theater will charge the maximum fare possible.

There’re no cheap movie theaters here, but there are some really neat ones. The Cape Cinema opened in 1930. There are individual arm chairs. Rockwell Kent painted the mural on the ceiling. They show movies you don’t see in the commercial movie theaters. In Chatham they just refurbished an old cinema like it was in the 1930’s.They cost regular amounts but are wonderful.
