The Circle Game: Joni Mitchell
Joni Mitchell turned 75 yesterday. She has long been my favorite singer so I couldn’t let her birthday go unnoticed. When I was in the Peace Corps in Ghana, I had the Clouds album with me. I think we listened to it just about every night. The tape used to stick in the humidity and we’d rewind it by hand and hope for the best. It never failed us. Hearing the songs again and again was never boring. I still feel the same way. Today’s music is some of my favorite Joni songs.

I was in a hurry yesterday and had time for just one song so I took Urge For Going, one of my early period favorites.
Today the Early Music Festival started in our neighbortown and I heard 17th century vocal music.
I should add a song for Lennie now. Raincoat or Marianne? Or both?

There are no artists better loved than Joni and Lennie here at KTCC so no is the answer. That they are both Canadian goes down to another eerie coincidence.

None of this should come as a surprise
“For a few months in 1967 and 1968, Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen had a fling, the consequences of which continue to echo in their work.
Introduced to each other backstage at Judy Collins’ songwriter’s workshop at the 1967 Newport Folk Festival by Judy Collins herself, who was, in large part, responsible for jump-starting the musical careers of both singer-songwriters, Cohen and Mitchell were officially an item by the time the two of them co-hosted a workshop at the Mariposa Folk Festival. Their romance ignited, flared, and exhausted itself within months
Cohen, who was then better known as a poet and novelist than as a musician, was almost 33 when they met; Mitchell was nine years his junior.
Conveniently, Cohen was often in New York where he would spend time with Mitchell, who was living at the Earl Hotel in the Village, and Mitchell was routinely playing dates in Montreal, where Cohen lived. Cohen also spent a month at Mitchell’s Laurel Canyon home when he was recruited by Hollywood in 1968 to score a movie based on his song, “Suzanne.” (The movie project failed to materialize.)”

I did not know any of this. I did know many of Joni’s peccadillos but I missed Lennie. Judy has also been a long time favorite of mine, and she is how I found Lennie. I happened on Joni and was immediately smittened with her music.
