How about a Christian Contemp tune? There is a cluster of groups (Citizen, Citizens and Saints, Ghost Ship) that are based in Seattle that play interesting non-mainstream Christian music.

I think I’m still a little surprised that rock music can also be Christian music. In my mind, or ear, I always expect hymns like the ones I heard while growing up.
I should have remembered the folk masses when I was in college. Music was changing to become more contemporary and appealing to younger mass goersRemembering that makes me understand the birth of Contemporary Christian rock music.
Most all mainline protestant churches have separate traditional and contemporary services, and Catholic are headed that way as well. I go to a non-denominational church that is quite conservative – but this type music is all that played along with some traditional hymns that have been hardened. When I was in college, there was one folk mass every Sunday while the rest were traditional services though some churches did have children’s’ masses.
I also like this. The lyrics don’t knock you on the head but rather invite you. I think the lead singer has a great voice.
It’s quite a remarkable (musical) change that has occurred over say the last 20 years and yet is now well established. Contemporary services are also quite light on liturgy. In theory some of the shift is to attract younger families, which I understand. Of course one has to be beware “entertaining” the congregation. But I think you would agree Ghost Ship type music is hardly trendy or akin to pop music.
Ghost Ship would attract those younger families you mentioned without softening the observance of the liturgy. I think the congregations of today live in a far different world which has already had an impact on religion and the family. Adding music wouldn’t necessarily be entertaining. It would just be contemporary.
